Hmm, it looks like the City of Cape Town is taking cues from the folks who are trying put a stop to poaching.
According to TimesLIVE, a brazen shootout between members of the Hard Livings and the American gangs in Cape Town’s Manenberg suburb was caught on CCTV camera last October.
Thanks to the advanced gunshot-detection system called ShotSpotter, it ultimately led to the conviction of a gangster named Virgil Koopman (the guy pictured above wearing the white hat and red shirt).
Another TimesLIVE article reports:
JP Smith‚ the City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security‚ said evidence from the ShotSpotter system was part of the case against Virgil Koopman.
Koopman was convicted at Wynberg Regional Court of discharging a firearm in a municipal area and sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment‚ suspended for five years.
ShotSpotter detected gunfire in Manenberg in October 2017. The city council strategic surveillance unit supplied the police with CCTV footage of the incident as well as the ShotSpotter alert‚ said Smith.
Take a look at the ShotSpotter in action, as well as how it all went downhill for Koopman:
Incredible how it gets the job done, don’t you think?
Soon, the ShotSpotter system, along with CCTV surveillance and drone tech, will be rolled out by the Mother City in crime hot-spots.
If it means curbing crimes like cash-in-transit heists or getting the cops to up their game, I’m all for it.
