Get ready to max out in the green room, because the Digicape Tand Invitational has begun!
One of the biggest, baddest and boldest bodyboarding competitions in the world is officially underway, after the main heat draw took place at sponsor Digicape’s store last night.
This invitation-by-only competition will see 16 of the world’s most talented bodyboard riders duking it out.
The likes of Iain Campbell, Sacha Specker, Matthew “Mafoos” Lombard and more will be competing against the formidable Tand wave – and each other, of course – at Cape Columbine, which is out near Paternoster.
In the end, only one brave lad or lass will walk away with the sought-after title of 2018 Tand Champion and R18 000 in prize money, from the total purse of R30 000.
Not to mention the well-deserved bragging rights for dominating the Tand.
This year also sees a slightly new competition format. Four unique teams have been established from the pool of competitors: ‘Locals’, ‘Legends’, ‘Young Guns’ and ‘Mixed Bag.’
As each rider progresses through the competition, they also gain points for their respective teams. Jarrett Johnson, the founder of the event [pictured below], said:
This new format does not impact the overall event programme, but adds a new dimension of excitement for competitors and spectators alike.
When the final buzzer is blown, not only will we announce this year’s Tand Champ, but also the overall winning team.
Johnson revealed that he was chuffed to see the competition going from strength to strength over the past few years, with its competition embraced by both the local and international bodyboarding communities alike:
Attendees at this year’s event can expect a lot of action-packed entertainment from our fantastic contingent of local and international riders, who are sure to put on a show like never before.
The official window period runs from today and ends on July 31, with the date of the competition only announced two or three days beforehand, when officials deem the ocean conditions ideal for riders.
When it is, we’ll be ready to see them hit the waves!
