Diego Maradona is trash, and that’s been the case for the best part of 32 years.
We know he hasn’t covered himself in glory at this World Cup, either, and his antics during Argentina’s match against Nigeria were nothing short of pathetic.
You’ll have heard ‘the Hand of God’ mentioned a fair few times over the past few weeks, and no, they’re not referring to Jordan Pickford and his penalty-saving heroics.
Let’s wind back the clock to a simpler time, and watch Diego with one of sport’s most famous cheating controversies:
Here’s the real irony – that guy above is now saying Colombia, who played like absolute bastards throughout the clash against England, were cheated.
Stuff below:
…the 57-year-old believes that American referee Mark Geiger favoured England against Colombia and accused star English striker Harry Kane of diving for the penalty that gave the Three Lions the lead…
“I saw a monumental theft. I apologise to all the Colombian people, but they must know the players are not to blame,” Maradona told Venezuela-based TV channel Telesur…
“It is the man who decides who the referee is who is to blame,” he said of Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of Fifa’s referees committee.
“A man like that [Geiger] should not be put in charge of a game of that magnitude. With all due respect, Pierluigi Collina, as the man who designates the referees, he is very bad. He must apologise to the Colombian people…
“Twice, the English threw themselves to the ground and he did not admonish them. This was theft.”
I’m sure you’ve seen the video of Harry Kane winning the penalty, but he was basically mounted by Carlos Sanchez:
Then again, Diego was probably off his tits whilst watching.
The good news is that FIFA officials are not impressed with his behaviour:
FIFA responded by strongly rebuking Maradona, whose “insinuations” were “entirely inappropriate and completely unfounded.”
“FIFA extremely sorry to read such declarations from a player who has written the history of our game,” it said in a statement.
I guess the only good part of Argentina being sent home is that we won’t be forced to watch his ‘I’ll do anything for attention’ sideline behaviour.
Two matches on Friday, two matches on Saturday – it’s a good weekend to be a football fan.
