Perhaps the Rolex Gang has struck again – twice.
Four months after members were arrested after a high-speed chase for the ages, some thieves have taken to the streets of Johannesburg and Pretoria to rob unsuspecting victims of their watches and jewellery.
The first robbery went down last Thursday afternoon, June 28, outside a car dealership in Newlands, Pretoria.
The target – an employee at the dealership – was having a conversation with two other men in the parking lot when a brown Mercedes-Benz sedan rolled onto the scene.
That’s when everything went downhill:
The suspects fled the scene with his wristwatch, which was initially reported as a Rolex watch. News24 can confirm that it’s an ordinary wristwatch worth no more than R2 000.
Perhaps this gaffe prompted these guys to try their luck again two days later.
The second robbery took place outside the gate the Helderwyk Estate, opposite Carnival City in Joburg on Saturday, June 30.
A couple had pulled up to the gate in their Ford Ranger when the robbers struck:
Hella chilling stuff to watch unfold – even an enclosed neighbourhood can’t get a break from crime.
Per a News24 report:
[The robbers] dragged a Boksburg couple from their vehicle at gunpoint and robbed them of two Rolex watches, a 5-carat diamond wedding ring and a diamond tennis bracelet – all valued at an estimated R1,2 million.
According to the couple’s son, the robbers were “very polite” and even asked his mother to “please take off” her watch …
Great, just what we needed to rub salt into the wound – muggers with manners.
The couple’s son below:
They didn’t take my mom’s handbag. They didn’t take cash or my dad’s wallet. They didn’t take anything else. They only took the watches and jewellery and they ran off with that.
He reckons they must have been watching his parents very closely before the robbery went down:
[The son] said his mom had hidden her ring in her hand during the robbery. Although it was no longer on her finger, the thief asked her for the ring specifically.
“How did he know about her ring? They must have been watched before,” the son said.
All of these guys are still on the loose.
