While Jim Carrey is busy putting President Donald Trump on blast for his immigration policy, another artist is also tackling a similar cause.
Yep, looks like Banksy is back at it again.
The theme of his artwork? The European migrant crisis.
According to CNN, at least eight new works that have suddenly cropped up in the streets of Paris, France, are reportedly the handiwork of the anonymous British graffiti artist.
If his posting photos of the works to his Instagram account on Tuesday (July 3) is of any indication, then ja, they’re his.
Let’s take a look at Banksy’s latest offerings:
Per the report:
One mural, which sits on a side street near the Bataclan concert hall – the site of a November 2015 terrorist attack that left 90 dead – is etched in black and white and shows a sad-looking figure covered in a veil, gazing downward.
Another wall in the city, near a neighborhood with a large immigrant population, shows a modernized [sic] Napoleon who sits on his horse in a billowing red cape that covers up his face.
In one piece, a small mouse-like creature with big, round Minnie Mouse ears and her iconic polka dot bow, stands beneath a faded “May 1968” – which marks the uprising in Paris that took place 50 years ago.
In true Banksy style, rodents, which have appeared in some of the artist’s previous works, are the models of some of these recent images …
A rat couple painted near the corner of a building looks to be staring longingly in the direction of the Eiffel Tower.
This one shows a rat flying out an uncorked champagne bottle at a Montmarte staircase in the Marais district. Perhaps it’s a symbol of festivity?
In a not-so-literal self-portrait, the rodent wears a cloth around its face – keeping its identity anonymous, just like its probable creator – and it clutches a box cutter similar to what Banksy uses to make his stencils.
On Banksy’s Instagram account, the caption to this gut-wrenching piece simply reads “Sorbonne University”, where it was painted. According to the BBC, it’s being seen as a dig at capitalism and greed in general.
The last piece, in the feature image, has already gained its fair share of haters:
Another mural shows a young black girl standing next to a pile of blankets and teddy bear, looking fearfully over her shoulder as she spray-paints a pink design over a swastika. The image, painted near a closed migrants center, was found around World Refugee Day on June 20.
Since then, it’s been vandalised with blue paint.
I think whoever did that missed the part of the girl painting over the swastika, which could possibly be a sign that we need to do something about Nazism and racism, perhaps?
Like the artworks are trying to convey, the migrant crisis is not something that can be ignored. Maybe Banksy ought to paint the Eiffel Tower to draw even more attention to the issue.
