That was quite the weekend of football, and I’m sure that image above has Liverpool fans in good spirits.
Over the weekend messages circulated about how a storm was headed our way, and the best course of action would to be stay indoors and brace for chilly weather.
Ja, no, lekker – there’s football on, so that will do just fine.
After a day of no footie on Friday, the World Cup returned on Saturday with one of the matches of the tournament. France knocked Argentina out with a 4-3 masterclass, a score that flattered Argentina, and this tweet quickly did the rounds:
I’m not going to explain it, so hit the history books if that doesn’t make sense.
The later match saw Portugal pipped by Uruguay, which means everyone can stop arguing about Messi vs Ronaldo and just enjoy the tournament.
We’ll skip ahead to Sunday, and a new candidate for dive of the tournament.
This time around there actually wasn’t an appeal or much rolling around, largely because it was two Spaniards crashing into each other:
Neymar: Best diver in world football.

A pretty solid effort, but I’m still going with Neymar’s roll for the ages in top spot.
Speaking of, how about a Mbappe / Neymar crossover?

Haters will say it’s Photoshopped.
Back to Spain versus Russia, and the exact moment Akinfeev’s save sent the home team through to the quarters:

I’m sure there are many Spaniards bleak about a late penalty call not going their way, but you have to be pretty ballsy to give a contentious call against Russia in their home country, with Putin watching on closely.
As for last night’s late game, Kasper Schmeichel’s heroics weren’t enough to save Denmark. Those highlights below:
And the ensuing celebrations:
WATCH: Ivan Rakitic scored the winning penalty as Croatia beat Denmark 3-2 on penalties to advance to the FIFA #WorldCup quarter-finals where they will face Russia.

That means you can cross Denmark off this list below:
Today’s 4PM kickoff sees Brazil face Mexico, which is why you have that meeting at 3:30PM that you have to duck out the office for, and then Belgium meet Japan at 8PM.
Enjoy it while it lasts, because it will be over soon and the feeling of emptiness will return.
