The British Royal Family is rich in blue blood like no other, but they’re even richer when it comes to how much green they’ve got stored away in their bank accounts.
No really, they’re a flipping wealthy bunch.
Their combined fortunes are enough to make even those who have a couple trillion rands tucked away in their pockets a little envious.
Here’s some info from a TIME report on how loaded they are:
It’s fair to say that Queen Elizabeth and the royal family’s net worth is in the tens of billions — around $88 billion (R1,2 trillion) as of 2017, according to Forbes.
Given that this is the Royal Family we’re talking about, and not your averages joes, how do they make all that dough? The reason is simple:
Much of the royal family lives off trusts like the Crown Estate, which is owned by the reigning monarch and includes real estate properties like Buckingham Palace.
Some of the royal family’s wealth also comes from a portfolio of extravagant personal collections. The British monarchy owns billions of dollars in property alone … the crown also owns one of the largest art collections in the world and the Crown Jewels collection, which is made up of more than 140 individual pieces and estimated to be worth at least $4 billion (R55,4 trillion).
Add taxpayers’ money into the mix, and they’ve got a tidy recipe for making cash money galore.
As you can imagine, each member of the family gets a generous slice from this trillion rand pie:
Out of the entire family, Queen Elizabeth has got the most moolah to her name. Understandable, since she’s getting coins from the Crown Estate and those real estate properties. She also collects a private salary from the Duchy of Lancaster, which is separate from the Crown Estate.
Must be nice to be a monarch.
Net worth: $520 million (R7,2 trillion)
Her hubby, Prince Philip, also has wads of money in his wallet, thanks to public duties:
Under the Sovereign Grant Act of 2011, Prince Philip received an annual Parliamentary annuity of £359 000 pounds, or around $500 234 (R6,9 million), “to meet the expenses of carrying out his public duties in support of the Queen.
Net worth: $30 million (R415 million)
Their darling son Prince Charles makes a tidy profit due to making most of his money through the Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate that funds the activities of whoever holds the title of Prince of Wales and his family.
Net worth: $400 million (R5,5 trillion)
Yup, he makes more than his daddy. Then again, he is heir to the throne. Sorry, Pops.
Prince William and Kate Middleton are coining it:
Prince William and Prince Harry have similar net worths, having both inherited the fortune amassed by their late mother, Princess Diana …
Prince William, who is second in line to the throne after his father, used to receive an annual salary of $62 000 for his work as an East Anglian Air Ambulance pilot, which he used to donate to charity …
Kate Middleton, who became the Duchess of Cambridge after marrying Prince William in April 2011, also has official royal expenses covered by the Duchy of Cornwall.
Net worth: Between $25 and $40 million (R346 million and R553 million) for Prince William; $10 million (R138 million) for Middleton.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just tied the knot, and they never have to worry about working a day in their lives:
Prince Harry’s net worth is similar to his brother’s, in part because they both inherited the same amount of money from Princess Diana’s estate …
Most of [Markle’s] net worth comes from her acting career before her 2017 engagement to Prince Harry. [Markle] was paid $50 000 (R692 thousand) per episode on Suits, making her annual salary for the USA Network drama around $450 000 (R6,2 millin), according to Fortune, but she left the show when she moved to the UK to live with Prince Harry.
Net worth: Between $25 and $40 million (R346 million and R553 million); $5 million (R69 million) for Markle.
Markle’s fortune is verrrry small in comparison to everyone. The next person on the list will – is – rolling in more dough than her …
Prince George and his siblings never have to worry about where their money is coming from. The hype around them has already resulted in a big economic boom:
Princess Charlotte is expected to have inspired $5 billion (R69 trillion) in economic activity while Prince George is expected to generate $3,6 billion (R49 trillion), according to Brand Finance.
Prince Louis is expected to generate a bit less than his older siblings, somewhere between $70-125 million (R968 million to R1,7 billion) within the first few weeks of his life.
Damn, Louis. You can still catch up to George and Charlotte if all goes well.
The Royal Family is rolling, and it looks like they don’t have to stress about not making any money.
