Drugs can unleash that inner creativity, or they can make one take a turn for the worst.
We saw in the case of Freddie Zyl, but for Bryan Lewis Saunders, an artist with a flair for pushing boundaries, it gets the juices flowing.
Back in March 1995, Saunders set out to look for “experiences that might profoundly affect my perception of self”.
That’s when he came up with an art experiment aptly named “Under The Influence”, which saw him take a different drug or intoxicant and draw a self-portrait of himself every day while under the influence, explains Insider.
The results, as you’re about to see, are petty out there.
For reference, this is what Saunder looks like:
These are some of the portraits he drew up, as well as the drug dosage that influenced his style:
Hash (dosage unknown):
Crystal meth (one bump):
Still looking like a portrait so far.
LSD (dosage unknown):
Okay, he’s going slightly Hunter S. Thompson:
Morphine IV (dosage unknown):
Sjoe, he doesn’t look very happy here.
Cocaine (half a gram):
For real, though, is that a person riding a ski-mobile behind him? Or is it a jet-ski?
Opium (dosage unknown):
Follow-up question: was there a bug in the room at the time when this self-portrait was taking shape?
Bath Salts (dosage unknown):
I think we can categorically state that there is no redeeming quality to bath salts.
They’re just not a good look.
Alcohol (dosage unknown):
I don’t know where it starts and where it ends, to be honest.
Blame it on the alcohol.
DMT (dosage unknown, during and after):
Your boy’s tripping balls here, cuz.
Heroin (dosage unknown, snorted):
It’s a bird … it’s a plane … wait, no, it’s Saunders having his Trainspotting moment.
Maybe just stick to the stuff that isn’t going to tear apart the very fabric of your existence.
