Back when I was a kid, one of those fun things I used to do was to try and dig to China.
Don’t look at me like that – a lot of children did the same.
Inspired by a popular cliché that played out in cartoons and movies, I tried to dig holes right through the planet that might lead me to some far-flung country.
Now there’s a funky interactive website that’ll show you exactly where you end up if you started digging, and didn’t die in Earth’s magma core.
It’s called Antipodes Map, which helps you find the antipodes (the other side of the world) of any place on Earth, according to My Modern Met:
Very helpful, hey?
As you can see, the Google-powered left map presents your location/digging start. The right map shows you exactly where you end up if you continue on in a straight line – this is known as the antipodal point for the selected location on the left map.
Per Antipodes Map‘s instructions, all you have to do is drag the left map, by clicking and holding as you move it, and when you will find the desired location, just click on it. The little digital man will then dig a tunnel from the selected location, right through the centre of the Earth, up to the other side of the world which will be represented on the right map.
I tested the map out, with Cape Town as my starting point:
This is where I ended up:
Well, shit. The advice isn’t very helpful, either.
At least I know now that I wouldn’t have ended up in China as a kid.
Visit Antipodes Map here to find out where you can find yourself if you dig a little deeper. Given South Africa’s precarious position on the map, just be prepared to get a little wet.
