Memes can be great things, like that one meme that shot Fleetwood Mac back into the limelight again.
But then you get those memes that shouldn’t have become memes in the first place. You know the kind – the ones that cause a boatload of damage, drama and ridicule, especially if someone is targeted.
Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown deactivated her Twitter account after becoming the victim of a horrible homophobic meme that’s been doing the rounds on the social media platform since last November.
The meme sees people writing nasty messages and attributing them to Brown, which has led to the creation of the hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown.
Harsh as hell, considering these people reckon they’re doing it all as a joke.
Huh, I bet they probably think blackface is a joke, too.
According to a report by Mashable, it all started when Twitter user @KelsFiona posted this tweet:
My head just aches from reading this dumb shit.
Luckily this idiot got suspended, but soon the dreaded hashtag was created “as a sort of social media call-to-arms”:
Since then, Tweeps have been going all out, sharing posts about Brown being homophobic:
In 14-year-old Brown’s case, the spiteful meme has driven her to deactivate her Twitter account.
But there are some good-hearted Twitter users out there who have voiced their support for Brown, and called out the douchebags who bullied her off and promoted violence against the LGBT community:
Yes to all of this!
Lesson to be learned, folks: avoid posting dumb shit like this, otherwise you’ll be in for a helluva lot of drama.
In fact, don’t even think up dumb shit like this. Just sit down and stay humble.
