It feels like only yesterday that we lost the legendary Robin Williams. Watching his onstage comedy antics, and acting in film gems like Dead Poets Society and Aladdin, it’s tear-jerking to think that he’s well and truly gone.
Now the official first trailer for Come Inside My Mind – a documentary detailing the life and career of Williams – has been released, and I’m practically bawling.
Directed by Marina Zenovich, the documentary is told largely through Williams’ own words, and “runs through his wild days in late-’70s L.A. all the way to his tragic death by suicide in 2014”, a report by Paste Magazine explains.
It will include previously unheard interviews, home movies and onstage footage, as well as interviews with the likes of comedy giants Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal.
Take a look at the trailer:
I’m not crying. Nope, not at all. Someone’s cutting up an onion in the office, that’s all.
As you can see from the trailer, the documentary will shift gears between Williams’ happier times and his “darker side, as he addresses his fear of abandonment, failure and drug use”.
His longtime pal, actor Steve Martin, sums it up perfectly:
Onstage [Williams] was the master; he was really comfortable onstage. Offstage, I felt like he was just holding himself together.
So does Zak Williams, Robin’s son, who appears once in the trailer:
My father didn’t always feel successful, but he was the most successful person I know.
Can someone please get that damn onion out of here, please?!
Comes Inside My Mind will premiere on HBO on July 16, and will probably premiere in South Africa not long after.
In the meantime, get yourself a box of tissues to wipe those eyes. Maybe get me one, too, while you’re at it.
