On my list of things to steal from a golf course, grass doesn’t really rank that high.
You should be starting at clubs and working your way down, but even then the idea of nicking actual grass seems silly.
Then again, when your course is slap bang in the heart of the Klein Karoo, green grass is a hot commodity.
Oudtshoorn Golf Club committee member Willem Burger was doing his regular rounds on a golf cart when he made the grave discovery.
A four-metre strip of “pristine grass” had been dug up and nicked in a “brazen” theft, says Times LIVE, and it’s all a bit of a mystery:
…he noticed that someone had marked off sections of a patch of grass on the course.
“I was riding in the golf cart on Monday late afternoon‚ driving through the lanes. I saw marks on the grass as if someone was marking it out. Tuesday morning I went to go and check on that patch of grass and saw that the grass had been stolen‚” said Burger.
“My suspicion was spot on. Someone had in fact stolen the grass. I suspect they first marked out the grass and after we left for the day they came back that evening.”
Have you no humanity, grass thieves? It was even premeditated – only a monster marks out the spot, and then returns later to snatch up the greenery.
I reckon if they had caught them in the act, we may have seen a repeat of the infamous Athlone Golf Club brawl of 2017.
Burger says the club is powerless to stop the thieves, because the fence itself has been stolen, and they lack the funds to redo the perimeter.
Still, in the midst of this skullduggery, he managed a quip:
“It is actually a compliment that someone would come all this way to steal our grass. That means we actually look after our grass‚” he quipped.
One must always look after their grass, like Seth does with his Cannador.
Chin up, Oudtshoorn, you’ll always have the Cango Caves and ostriches.
