TV audiences love a good high-speed car chase, and perhaps we all have OJ Simpson to thank for that one.
The Juice and his Bronco changed the high-speed car chase game forever, and now news choppers patrol the sky hoping to catch some crook trying to outrun law enforcement.
This guy in east Los Angeles gave it a good shot back in February, but he ended up being nabbed.
Then there is the riveting live TV that is the chopper locking onto the wrong car, ultimately following a random dude who popped in at a mini-mart.
Maybe he was getting a bite to eat, or maybe he was taking a tinkle – I don’t know, but either way, it’s rather awkward when the news anchor is trying to talk up the drama of a guy driving quite normally:
Breaking news – normal speed car arrives at mini-mart.
Maybe we should cut them slack, like Thrillist does:
The whole mix-up is actually kind of understandable. As you can see in the clip…the actual car involved in the chase (a black Toyota Camry) drove beneath an overpass at the same time as another black sedan (a black Chevy Impala). From above, both cars looked almost identical, which explains why the camera operator got a bit mixed up when the Impala came out ahead of the Camry. The anchors didn’t miss a beat and continued to speculate about why the driver pulled into the gas station until it’s brutally obvious they had the wrong car.
The bit below where they realise what has happened is rather grand:
Oops.
The error is all the funnier when you consider the drama that was going on with the actual chase:

You can relax, because the madman was eventually brought to book:
As for the driver of the Camry (which turned out to be stolen), he evaded police for quite some time, taking them on a chase at speeds up to 125mph for over two hours through three different counties before being apprehended and taken into custody along with his female passenger. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
No one was hurt, the perp was apprehended, and it made for entertaining telly of the failed variety.
