Step aside, folks, because there’s a new Miss USA in town.
Her name? Miss Nebraska, or Sarah Rose Summers.
And no, she’ got nothing to do with Alaska.
Summers, a 23-year-old contestant from Omaha, Nebraska beat out 50 other women on Monday to win this year’s Miss USA competition. She’s taking over from Kate McCullough, who won the competition last year.
How did Summers do it?
TIME has got the details:
The final three contestants — Summers, Caelynn Miller-Keyes of North Carolina and Carolina Urrea of Nevada — were asked what they would write on a blank sign on the way to a hypothetical march. Miller-Keyes was 1st runner-up and Urrea the 2nd runner-up.
Summers said she would encourage people to “speak your voice” with her sign. Urrea vowed to work to eliminate homelessness. Miller-Keyes spoke about sexual assault prevention, saying she would march for “your body, your rights.”
All valid answers, in my opinion. Still a weird question to ask, though, but beauty pageants gotta do what beauty pageants gotta do. *Shrugs*
Anyway, it seems like viewers were taken with the Nebraska native and her answer. And it seemed like the judges – comprising five female entrepreneurs and executives – were quite high on her, too.
Sorry ’bout it, Nevada and North Carolina.
So who is the sensational Summers?
According to a report by Elite Daily, Summers earned two degrees from Texas Christian University and has completed her clinical rotations to become a certified Child Life Specialist.
Smart AND stunning. And you thought beauty pageants were just about bathing suits and sex appeal.
The new Miss USA is also into health-related matters:
During the competition, Summers revealed that she’s super passionate about forging a healthy relationship between food and fitness. And she’s also dedicated to helping others do the same! As someone who personally witnessed the hardships of eating disorders (in her own mother and in close friends), Summers is passionate about bringing awareness to the issue and she’s working with NEDA to do so.
Good for her. So now that Summers is rocking a tiara for the entire United States, what’s next?
The new Miss USA will be able to use her platform to make real changes in the world. She’ll be a goodwill ambassador for the United States, which will take her all over the country and give her the opportunity to inspire people everywhere.
No pressure, Summers.
She’ll now go on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe competition.
Our girl Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters better watch out, because Miss Nebraska – I mean, Miss USA – is coming for her Miss Universe crown.
