So the UK’s Sunday Times Rich List for 2018 has been released, and nine South African-born individuals appear on the list, according to BusinessTech.
They include familiar names like Nicky Oppenheimer, Douw Steyn and Mark Shuttleworth, the latter whose wealth increased by a whopping R5,6 billion in the past year.
Not bad at all.
But the other six individuals? Chances are you might have never heard of them.
Here’s the rundown of these six South Africans who are striking it rich:
This chap is Nathan Kirsh. He’s in the cash-and-carry, commercial property and investment business. Kirsh owns 75% of Jetro Holdings, which operates more than 100 cash-and-carry stores and restaurant depots in America.
Before that, he made his first fortune with a corn-milling business.
Net worth: R65,78 billion (ranked #31 on the Sunday Times Rich List).
Accountant Manfred Gorvy’s interests range from property and venture capital to African agriculture and Refresco, an independent soft drinks and fruit juice bottler.
According to the report, his London-based Hanover Acceptances group saw assets rise to more than R13,8 billion in 2016, the Sunday Times said.
Niiiice.
Net worth: R14,56 billion (ranked #163).
South African-born Sir Donald Gordon is also in the property game; his main UK operation split in 2010 into Intu Properties and Capital & Counties Properties.
He’s even been knighted.
Net worth: R11,67 billion (ranked #197).
South African-born Tony Tabatznik (pictured, left, with actor Danny Glover) is in the pharmaceuticals field. He sold his Stevenage business Arrow Generics to US firm Watson Pharmaceuticals for R29,3 billion.
Now look, Tabatznik is living the good life at film premieres and special events. Lucky guy.
Net worth: R8,34 billion (ranked #251).
Vivian Imerman, otherwise known as “the Man from Del Monte”, was born in SA and made his billion rand fortune after turning around the tinned fruit company. He later took control of Whyte & Mackay, the Scottish whisky group, and is currently in charge of London investment operation Vasari.
Net worth: R6,50 billion (ranked #329).
Last but not least, this here is Richard Gnodde. He got his money from dabbling in finance. He took over as CEO of Goldman Sachs International after the exit in 2016 of Michael Sherwood.
Fun fact: he and his wife Kara are trustees of Kew Gardens, the botanical gardens in London. Now you know.
Net worth: R2,33 billion (ranked #836).
There you have it, folks. These are the ultra-rich South Africans that have been wheeling, dealing, and making a killing.
Must be nice.
