Elon Musk isn’t known for having successful relationships. A bit stroppy when it comes to defending his company, yes, but not known for long-lasting romances.
He’s been married three times – twice to actress Talulah Riley – and he was involved with actress Amber Heard not too long ago.
Could this be fifth time lucky for the billionaire CEO of Tesla?
It looks like Musk and musician Grimes are an item. The couple turned up to the Met Gala on Monday, and Business Insider SA says that they’ve been dating for weeks.
Check out the most outrageous outfits here, but let’s see Elon and Grimes.
How did their relationship come about? They can thank Twitter and artificial intelligence for that.
They met on Twitter about a month ago because of a joke about AI.
Huh?
Page Six explains:
The joke involves a thought experiment known as Roko’s Basilisk, which posits the notion that AI will result in the end of the world as we know it. The theory is that robots will one day torture those who didn’t embrace AI and help speed its development. Some advocates of the theory worry that even knowing about Roko’s Basilisk is all that’s needed to be targeted for robot retaliation.
Sounds reassuring. Now how did that bring Musk and Grimes together?
Musk thought it would be hilarious to post something on Twitter and play off of the concept’s name, using “Rococo” in a pun, which refers to the baroque 18th century style. While doing research (yip, you gotta back up your jokes with solid facts these days), he came across “Rococo Basilisk”, a character Grimes created for the 2015 video of her song, “Flesh Without Blood.”
And the character, according to Grimes, is always “eternally tortured” by artificial intelligence.
Musk must have a real good chuckle over that. I know I did.
He reached out to Grimes and they hit it off from there. Neither one has officially confirmed nor denied the relationship. But if Musk tweeting “Rococo Basilisk” hours before showing up to the Met Gala with Grimes is of any indication, I think they’re totally dating.
And it’s all thanks to AI.
