There’s a ton of apps out there right now. Some come and go, but others like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp dominate the Apple iPhone app world with iron fists.
They were the most downloaded apps for the smartphone during the first quarter of 2018.
But, according to Business Insider, Chinese apps are catching up fast. Really, really fast. Chinese developers like Tencent and Baidu have been working hard in order to stake their claim in the iPhone app game, and it looks like their efforts are paying off big time.
In other words: you better watch out, Facebook, the competition is indeed fierce this year, and they’re coming for your global domination gig.
Here are the top 10 most downloaded iPhone apps in the world right now, with the numbers being the download numbers from the first quarter of this year alone.
10. Google Maps
This mapping app has been downloaded an estimated 22,4 million times in the first three months of this year.
9. iQiyi
The first Chinese app to hit this list, iQiyi s a YouTube-style video streaming app developed by Baidu, with an estimated 22,6 million downloads. Approximately 481 million users spend over 56 billion hours on it (I get tired just thinking about it).
8. QQ
A Tencent creation, it’s a Facebook Messenger-style instant messaging app that’s been downloaded 22,6 million times. It also provides online games, music, shopping and more. Sign me up!
7. WeChat
It’s Tencent’s more well-known app, otherwise known as QQ’s cooler older sibling. As of March 2018, the messaging app has more than 1 billion users, with 28.9 million more users joining in on the fun.
6. Facebook
Well, the Cambridge Analytica data scandal hit this social network hard this year, but the app still ranks high in the top 10, with an estimated 29,4 million downloads.
5. Instagram
It’s the second-most popular free app on the iPhone app store, with an estimated 31 million downloads this year. We’re halfway to the number one app, folks!
4. Messenger
Facebook’s Messenger app is still pretty popular, and it’s been downloaded 31,3 million times – sorry Instagram, it beat you out by 300 000 downloads.
3. WhatsApp
About 33,8 million people downloaded the messaging app, joining 1,5 billion other users.
2. YouTube
This Google-owned video app is the iPhone app store’s consistently popular free product. It was downloaded 35,3 million times this year alone. But as we all know, there can only be one app to rule all apps, and that would be …
1. Tik Tok
No, we’re not talking about the Kesha song. Tik Tok, also known as Douyin in China, is a music video and social media app that lets you shoot and edit short clips, then add music and special effects to them.
It’s owned by Bytedance, the same company that bought social video app Musical.ly for a cool R12.6 billion last year. Tik Tok’s become a huge favourite among Chinese iPhone users, and was downloaded an estimated 45,8 million times this year – almost double Facebook’s numbers.
So if you’re in the market for an app for your iPhone, look no further than this top 10.
