And just like that, Sloane Hunter enters hibernation.
How long will she stay there? No one knows. Call it the beginning of a hiatus – or of a full stop on the either side of a full stop – whatever it is, the time has come to say farewell, au revoir, and whatever else people proclaim when they make a show of their own goodbyes.
For the past two and half years, Sloane Hunter has penned one article after another, day after day, month after month, delivering news that covers a range of important shit and, well, now it’s over.
As life happens, one soon realises that you just can’t keep doing the same thing every day – you need a little uprising, a change of scenery. So when you get offered a chance to do so, there’s no harm in dipping in your toe to test the water, just to see how you feel. You might decide to jump in, you might not.
And while I honestly think this is one of the greatest jobs (free stuff, half days, legit holidays), you know what they say: it’s better to under-stay than to overstay your welcome.
But I digress.
Writing under the pen name “Sloane Hunter” gave me the freedom to explore my own writing style without an accountability attached to my name. Cowardly? Perhaps, but no regrats here, babes.
Miss Hunter – at times addressed as “Mr”- received her fair share of hate mail over the years. From being called an ageist to a sexist, with a dash of feminist added to the mix, no doubt my time at 2oceansvibe has been one fucking colourful ride.
When I first jumped onboard the 2oceansvibe bandwagon, Sloane Hunter wasn’t meant to be around for that long, but as life would have it she hung around. Until now.
Sloane, my babes, what am I going to do with you? Or without you? Think of you only when the sole person who knows me as “Sloane” shouts your name across a busy Cape Town street? Turn you into a Twitter personality? Leave you behind as I logout of 2oceansvibe for the last time?
Don’t cry, we’re in this together.
To you, the readers of 2oceansvibe, this might mean nothing, as you realise for the first time that each story has its own author. Either way, it has been an absolute laugh. Except when you get really angry and send legal notices. So unnecessary.
To the 2oceansvibe team, you have become my every day. Who am I going to bitch about stupid people to? Or froth milk for? Or sing Sandstorm with!?!?
To Seth, aweh. Thanks for everything. I have a feeling our paths will cross once more in this lifetime.
