We kid, we kid.
How could we, as South Africans, be so ridiculous as to use a Mexican word to stop people entering restaurants? We have enough discrimination as it is.
So, moving on, let’s get a bit of context.
The term “gringo” is a non-derogatory term used to label those who aren’t Mexican and refers to a person, especially an American, who is not Hispanic or Latino.
As a consequence, gringos are often treated differently because they obviously act differently.
Take Mexican beer, for example. For some visitors to Mexico, the go-to brand is Corona. However, as soon as it’s ordered from a bar, gringo status is immediately declared.
Yes, yes, we have spoken about this before, and it’s just one of the reasons why we prefer Sol, the authentic Mexican beer.
Because ordering a Sol comes without the gringo status.
As the story goes, it’s the country’s first beer in a transparent bottle, and was created with a spirit of freedom – or espiritu libre.
It is with this spirit that the following Cape Town restaurants not only stock the beer, but have proudly associated themselves with the brand:
The Blue Peter
There’s nothing like lounging around on the Blue Peter’s lawns, watching the sun go down across Table Bay. So why not do it with a bucket of ice cold Sol next to you?
Brass Bell
Whichever part of the Bell you choose to sit, you will be welcome with open arms by locals and visitors alike.
Crush a beer and watch the waves pounding the shoreline through the window – lekker.
EL Barrio
This Taqueria (taco joint) is loud and proud about its Mexican influence, which is why Sol is the perfect fit.
Arriba!
Inside Bar
Said to have some of the best bunny-chows, curries and pizzas the west coast has to offer – and if you’re just wanting to quench your thirst with a Sol after a long walk on the beach, go ahead.
Bleach
It’s Blouberg’s shisa nyama by the beach, and whether you’re there for a day or night vibe, Bleach will make sure you feel at home.
There will be plenty of Sol to keep you in fine spirits, of course.
Go on, nobody wants to be known as a gringo and now you know better.
