The case involving a deceased Constantia woman has rocked the southern suburbs, but police remain tight-lipped about the identity of the man taken into custody.
Arrested on Thursday for the murder of Gill Packham, he is expected to make his first appearance in court today, reports News24:
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk, confirmed that a 57-year-old man had been taken into custody, but said the man could not be identified yet.
“The suspect, who cannot be named at this stage, will appear at the Wynberg Regional Court on Monday, where he will be expected to apply for bail,” he told News24.
However, Die Burger on Saturday named the arrested man as Rob Packham, Gill’s husband. They are pictured below:
An administrator at the Springfield Convent School, Gill was reported missing Thursday, February 22. That evening, a burnt-out BMW matching the description of her car was found at the Diep River train station, where a body later identified as Gill’s was discovered in the boot.
This via a tweet from Team New24 earlier today:
Die Burger also reported that Gill had “allegedly died from a blow to the back of the head” in her house, before her body was loaded into the BMW.
According to MyBroadband, police used a section 205 subpoena to obtain Gill’s cellphone call records as well as those of her family:
The content of text messages between Rob Packham and his murdered wife Gill has aided police in answering critical questions about her death, according to the Rapport.
There was “a lot of interaction” on the couple’s phones on the day of Packham’s disappearance, it added.
Harrowing.
UPDATE: This via IOL:
A Constantia man accused of killing his wife – whose burnt body was found in the boot of her car – has been sent to Pollsmoor Prison…
In court proceedings, state prosecutor Brynmor Benjamin indicated that the state was opposing bail as they believed Packham would try to destroy evidence.
Blood was allegedly found in the husband’s car, in the garage of the couple’s home and the bathroom.
Defence attorney, Ben Matthewson, said the arrest was illegal and asked for Packham to remain at Diep River Police Station until his next appearance on Friday.
Magistrate Goolam has ruled that Packham will remain in custody and be sent to Pollsmoor Prison until his next appearance.
Apparently the inmates of Pollsmoor Prison aren’t very kind to those accused of murdering their wives.
