I’ve never really had a barn to explore, but I have dug around in the back of a few sheds.
Other than black widow spiders, broken camping chairs and a few incriminating photos of family members from their younger days, I’ve never really found too much of any interest.
The same can’t be said for whoever found this stylish 1963 Land Rover Series 2 A 88” Pickup, because it’s a thing of beauty.
Listed on Gumtree without a price, by someone in Sandton, here’s some more info:
Found on a farm in 2016, we purchased it and immediately commissioned a full restoration. On doing more research we found that it was originally a military vehicle, then became a farm vehicle for a number of years before being locked up at the back of a barn. It had been repainted several times, the last coat being yellow and clearly done by hand!
Fortunately it was a good example in that all numbers matched the paperwork, and all parts were intact and merely needed refreshing.
Body work was stripped to bare-metal and a full new paint job was done. Engine and all mechanicals were overhauled or replaced where necessary.
Everything is new, or as-new and ready for a collector or Landy enthusiast to enjoy.
Original Land Rover 2.25 litre petrol engine. Will be sold with sought-after personalised license number ‘HUEI66GP’.
You can see the rest of that ad here, but it does end by saying that “all offers north of R250 000 will be considered”.
How rad is that find? You pop your head into the back of a barn or shed and boom, there’s a styling old Landy.
We reached out to Gumtree South Africa’s Head of Automotive, Jeff Osborne, to see what he thought of the barn find:
“There’s nothing more satisfying for some enthusiasts than a good barn find. In America it’s a huge category with websites and even TV shows dedicated to finding and selling these rural gems, and we’re starting see more listings in South Africa.
The typical barn find is in need of some serious restoration but some vehicles are fixed up before they’re sold and, for the really lucky barn finder, are in nearly mint condition after you have cleared off the dust.”
Sounds like he believes that Landy should fetch that R250 000 and then some.
If you’re thinking you need to find a car in tip top shape, think again. This 1958 Peugeot 203, also found in a barn, was advertised for R18 750.
Boom – sold:
So, what do you have stashed away in the barn / shed / spare room that is gathering dust instead of gathering cash money?
Dig around, upload to Gumtree, roll in the dough.
Think of it as the easiest side hustle you’ll ever find.
