Cash-in-transit heists along the unprotected open roads of South Africa are a popular occurrence.
But while we normally see the end results, via images taken from the scene, it’s not often that we get to watch the actual robbery go down.
Like the video below.
Outside of Pretoria on Thursday, about 15km from Brits Plaza, Dylan de Brouwer witnessed such an episode and was quick enough to catch the incident on video, reports News24.
At first a part of the slow-moving traffic, he thought he was approaching an accident until he saw the G4S van on the side of the road:
“I looked and saw the G4S van explode and saw money going everywhere, so I realised it was a cash-in-transit heist.
“I went back in my car and took my cell phone and I heard shots.”
He added that he saw an Audi next to the van – here’s what managed to capture:
Insane.
Speaking to the media, Constable Matsobane Mabusela provided a summary of what happened:
[T]he nine suspects started firing shots on the cash delivery truck tires until it lost control.
“The suspects ordered the security guards to go out of the van, set explosives on the cash safe and managed to get away with an undisclosed amount of money.”
Thankfully no one was injured, although the robbers fled the scene with an “undisclosed amount of money”.
I wonder if the amount of any of these heists will ever be disclosed.
