Ooooh, we got a badass over here.
More than ever, all eyes were on Anna Wintour when Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, took a seat next to her in the front row of Richard Quinn’s fashion show at London Fashion Week on Tuesday.
One is the Queen of the United Kingdom, the other the queen of the fashion world, and the two appeared to be having a great time, chatting and smiling throughout the show.
However, people were irked to see that Wintour refused to remove her bug-eye sunnies.
After all, without her trademark sunglasses, who even is Dame Anna Wintour? That is a joke, because the editor-in-chief of US Vogue is, to many, a goddess in her own right.
According to etiquette expert Grant Harrold, who worked in Prince Charles’ household, the fashion queen actually broke royal protocol, reports Hello:
“Ms Wintour should know that to wear sunglasses when talking to another person, with no medical reason, is unacceptable,” he told the Press Association. “She should have removed them before being in the presence of the Queen, let alone in discussion.
“Eye contact is important while holding a discussion, and not removing sunglasses is the height of bad manners and a serious breach of royal protocol. If the Queen gave her permission to keep them on then that would be acceptable, however this would be unlikely.”
Okay buddy, this is 2018, not 1918 – I mean, look how much fun the two seem to be having:
Mashable spoke to another royal etiquette expert, William Hanson:
“Dame Anna Wintour should have removed her sunglasses when in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen at London Fashion Week,” says Hanson. Hanson said that Wintour has managed to remove the glasses at other royal events, including the Fashion Week reception at Buckingham Palace the day before.
“Although I know that Dame Anna would have meant The Queen no deliberate disrespect, it is a shame that the queen of fashion’s protocol was far from on trend yesterday,” he says.
That said, he doesn’t think Her Majesty would have been offended. “She would probably have noticed and internally thought it was a bit odd, but The Queen has seen it all and clearly took it all in her stride!”
After watching The Queen, I would have to agree. It appears that The Royal Family does, too:

Oh, and the reason Queenie made a surprise appearance? To honour Quinn with an award, reports Vogue:
[The Queen’s] audience was requested by the British Fashion Council to present Quinn with the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, a royal stamp of approval the Peckham-based designer found out he was receiving just weeks before his autumn/winter 2018 show.
I wonder what she thought of the show. As peculiar as Wintour’s decision to wear sunglasses, I’m sure.
