Full disclosure – I’m not a Game of Thrones fan, but props to Paul Fentz.
The German figure skater was always going to grab headlines with his GoT-inspired free skate routine at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games.
It’s just a pity that NBC, the Olympics official broadcaster, haven’t made the video available to those outside of the US.
If you happen to be in Yankee Land you can see the full video here, but we’ll have to make due with this description from Mashable:
During the performance, Fentz wore a crimson leotard, complete with a gold breastplate, and faux chainmail. On Fentz’s right wrist he also donned a red piece of fabric, which some believe to be a nod to Jamie Lannister’s missing hand.
The Game of Thrones-inspired skate earned Fentz a score of 139.82, which left him in third place with a combined scored of 214.55 from his previous run.
Commentator Tara Lipinski seemed delighted by the ensemble, cheekily saying, “It was not his best, but a Lannister always pays his debts,” as Fentz completed his routine. Fellow commentator Johhny Weir later called her “Cersei” for her critiques of the performance.
Even I get that reference.
The best we can do is show you a similar routine from Fentz during his performance at the recent Finlandia Trophy:
