Before our brand new president was sworn in yesterday afternoon, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa was seen strutting his stuff on Sea Point’s promenade.
It gave us a warm, tingly feeling as a new flame of hope for the future of South Africa was ignited.
So let’s meet the first family, shall we? Or, at least, the First Lady.
Unlike South Africa’s ex-number one, Ramaphosa only has one wife: a strong, talented woman who is a medical doctor and mother of four.
Her name is Tshepo Motsepe, and she has a “Master of Public Health in Maternal Child Health and Ageing at Harvard School of Public Health and she also holds a Social Entrepreneurship Programme certificate from the Gordon Institute of Business Science,” reports W24:
She also has a charitable side since she works with several non-profit organisations and is also chairperson of the African Self Help Trust (ASHA), non-executive director for the Wits Health Consortium and Hospice, a patron of the South African Civil Society for Women’s, Adolescents and Children’s Health, a patron of the Students Sponsorship Programme, and is a former board member of both the Vaal Reefs Disaster Trust and the Kids Haven Foundation.
Phew.
And her connection to Patrice Motsepe? She’s his sister, the shared surname might have given you a clue.
The two are the offspring of late Chief Augustine Butana Chaane Motsepe, also known as ABC, who was a mining magnate and former Mamelodi Sundowns owner.
And there’s more:
Patrice is of course married to Precious Moloi-Motsepe, the uber stylish philanthropist who is the founder and CEO of African Fashion International (AFI).
The couple, below:
So, you could say, running businesses is, like, in the family.
But wait! The connections continue:
Then there’s Tshepo’s sister, Bridgette Radebe, who is married to Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe.
Again, below:
So fresh! I wonder what the couple will be wearing at the State of the Nation Address this evening.
Right, back to the Ramaphosas.
Cyril and Tshepo currently live in Fresnaye, so it’s no wonder that he was spotted in Sea Point. Apparently, the stretch of land they live on, which lies at the foot of Lion’s Head, costs R30 million when they bought it.
Here’s a pic of their plot before a house was built. Lekker views, hey?
Definitely worth more now, I’m sure. They also have a family home in Chiawelo, Soweto.
As it stands, the couple are already offering a fresh face for South Africa’s politics, now let’s wait and see what Cyril has to say this evening at SONA.
