There’s Nothing You Love More Than Photos Of Abandoned Olympic Sites

When you host the Olympics, the world's eyes are trained on your city for a few weeks. It's a very different story once the cameras leave.

Admit it, you love them.

Hosting the Olympics means investing a large sum of money towards the necessary infrastructure, but then everyone flocks to the host city and you make it all back.

Err, not really, because time and time again hosting the Olympics has proven to be a costly affair. Then there’s the upkeep of the stadiums and facilities, which, as the years tick by, often falls by the wayside.

With the Winter Olympics opening ceremony kicking off later today in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the Telegraph decided to share some “eerie photos of abandoned Olympic venues”.

I’m keen, so let’s do this:

1984 Winter Olympics – Sarajevo

2004 Summer Olympics – Athens

2008 Summer Olympics – Beijing

Via Business Insider, here’s the aftermath of the 2016 Summer Olympics – Rio de Janeiro

We shall say nothing of the 2010 World Cup.

You can find more images of decay here, if you haven’t yet scratched that itch.
