That’s what Jim Carrey is now urging people to do.
Announcing on Tuesday that he was selling his shares in the social networking company, Carrey encouraged everyone who would listen to not only follow the same path, but delete their Facebook accounts, too.
Why? Because the company obviously profited from Russian interference in the US election.
The Telegraph has more:
In a statement, Carey [sic] said: “For a long time America enjoyed a geographical advantage in the world with oceans on both sides to protect it.
“Now, social media has created cyber-bridges over which those who do not have our best interest in mind can cross and we are allowing it. No wall is going to protect us from that.
“We must encourage more oversight by the owners of these social media platforms. This easy access has to be more responsibly handled.
“What we need now are activist investors to send a message that responsible oversight is needed. What the world needs now is capitalism with a conscience.”
Carrey even shared a personal interpretation of his campaign, something he tends to do with most of his Twitter posts:
Nice little signature at the bottom right there, hey? Own it, Jim.
If you think Carrey is a little insane, you might be right – but that doesn’t mean he is wrong. Facebook revealed that as many as 126 million Americans may have seen content from Russia-based agents on the site over the past two years. That’s a third of the population.
Although the US Department of Justice is currently investigating the impact of Russian meddling on the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election – including the assessment of the role of social media sites – it’s not clear what consequences Facebook will be dealt.
So, we might as well take things into our own hands, right? Well, that’s what Carrey thinks.
