Off the back of Mother!, Jennifer Lawrence was probably keen to land herself a role in a more mainstream kind of movie.
To do that, she chose life as a spy over death, playing a Russian agent in Red Sparrow.
The trailer, dropped out of nowhere yesterday, sees J-Law play Dominika Egorova, a ballerina seeking protection for her mom at all costs, reports Jezebel – which, of course, is where things get interesting:
Egorova is manipulated into doing one job for Mother Russia in exchange for the health and safety of her mother (!), but is quickly roped into becoming a deadly assassin, or Red Sparrow.
The best Red Sparrow who ever lived.
The fact that she’s able to become the deadliest assassin of all time though she only begins training in her mid-twenties is predicated on the idea that prima ballerinas are well adapted to physical and psychological torture.
But we wouldn’t expect anything less from Jen, hello. Take a look:
For Marvel fans, it’s the Black Widow movie they’ve been waiting for (you know, Avengers’ most popular superhero). For some, it’s like Black Swan turned into a spy film. Others may even suggest similarities to Atomic Blonde.
But just because they are all roles with strong female leads, doesn’t mean they should be compared, no?
Red Sparrow will be released on March 2, 2018.
