Daniel Day-Lewis will be bowing out of his acting career in style.
Starring in Paul Thomas Anderson’s period drama, Phantom Thread, Day-Lewis plays Reynolds Jeremiah Woodcock, a “celebrated dressmaker to the debutantes of Britain” who is now under pressure from the “New Look and influences from across the Channel,” reports The Guardian.
As the story goes, Woodcock is soon charmed by a young waitress which is where, of course, things get interesting:
Just when he is at his lowest, Woodcock falls in love with a shy, maladroit German waitress at the country hotel where he happens to be staying. This is Alma, played by Vicky Krieps.
With his connoisseur’s eye, Woodcock sees in her a grace and beauty that no one else had noticed, certainly not Alma herself. Dazzled, she comes to live with him as his assistant and model in the central London fashion house over which Woodcock rules with his sister and confidante Cyril, played with enigmatic reserve by Lesley Manville.
But, as Woodcock becomes ever more impossible and controlling, submissive Alma must find new, more dysfunctional ways to re-establish her emotional mastery over him.
While we’re used to seeing Daniel Day-Lewis with some sort of fantastical hairstyle, the role he plays in his last film – *tear* – sees a soft-spoken gentleman with a huge talent and also a huge ego.
Will this really be Day-Lewis’s final performance? He’s not one for speaking bollocks, so we must assume it is and say farewell in a suitable manner.
At least it’s a goodie, but what else would you expect from a director like Anderson?
