Chances are you haven’t heard of Marco Marais, but the Border batsman just etched his name into cricketing history.

Over the weekend, representing Border in a three-day match against Eastern Province in East London, the 24-year-old broke a world record that has stood since 1921.

Battering an undefeated triple century off just 191 balls, he comfortably beat out Charles Macartney’s 221-ball effort for Australians against Nottinghamshire all of 96 years ago.

Here’s the moment he reached his 300, with this video tweeted out by teammate Somila Seyibokwe:

Marais brought up his century off 68 balls, before going on to break the South African record for the fastest double century, reaching his 200 off 139 balls…

“I had absolutely no idea, someone actually posted it on Facebook and I saw my name mentioned up there with some of the biggest names in world cricket, it is amazing.

“To be honest it still feels like it didn’t happen, it’s just unreal to see my name there with guys like Sir Vivian Richards and Graeme Smith [ranked 5th and 8th on the fastest first class triple century list] .

“I spoke to Martin Walters [former Border captain] just after the 300 happened and he told me that ‘regardless of what happens in you career from now, nothing and nobody can take that away from you, it is with you forever’, which was really nice.”

Smith had South Africa’s previous fastest triple century record, off 249 balls, for Somerset back in 2005.

I don’t know if he’s going to challenge for a spot in the big leagues just yet, given that he still averages under 40 in first-class cricket, but a world record for fastest ever 300 is one hell of a feather in the cap.
