If you want to be awarded the prestigious Six-Star Design Rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), you have to tick some pretty forward-thinking boxes.
Of all the developments at the Waterfront, and it seems like there’s a new one going up every weekend, only two have ever nailed six stars.
Props to No. 5 Silo, then, who have been given the rating in recognition of its industry leading and environmentally sustainable design.
The mixed use development Silo district’s centrepiece is the Zeitz MOCAA, and all design principles considered in the rating were subjected to rigorous testing.
We’ve told you about the museum and the man behind it before – HERE – and here’s how that district is mapped out:
The design draws on the rich industrial and marine history of the area, and one of the sustainable heroes selected for inclusion in the construction of No. 5 Silo was locally sourced Rhino Wood.
They provided the eco-friendly timber of great durability and stability, used for exterior decking as well as interior features.
The interior walkways, landings and stairways, as well as the generous rooftop deck were all built using Rhino Wood. By incorporating sustainable timber in the design, the architects added natural beauty both inside and out.
They also created a durable and beautiful low maintenance rooftop deck with a warm, weathered appearance that can withstand the worst conditions Cape Town can throw at it.
Who would say no to chilling on a rooftop deck and engaging in a bit of mountain staring, a local pastime, whilst resting smug in the knowledge that all the timber was ethically sourced?
Rhino Wood has steadily been building its reputation as a leader in the production and supply of sustainable timber. Being the timber of choice for one of South Africa’s leading sustainable developments consolidates that position.
Because everyone loves a good infographic, here are five reasons why you’ll want to choose Rhino Wood:
