Architectural photography is more than just a photograph with a building in it.
They are, in themselves, art, and this year’s finalists for the Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards remind us how documenting structures can and should be so much more than just snapping a pic.
According to Dezeen, the shortlist was selected by a panel of judges that included Royal Academy of Arts curator Kate Goodwin, Klein Dytham Architecture founders Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein, photographers Richard Bryant and Matt Emmett, and designer Andrew Chen:
The shortlist is divided into four categories: “Buildings in Use,” “Exteriors,” “Interiors,” and “Sense of Place” and will be exhibited at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Berlin from 15th – 17th November.
The first is the recently completed Bosjes farm chapel in Ceres. You might have seen it crop up in interior decorating articles of late as it is gorgeous.
According to HuffPost:
The building, designed by Steyn Studio, explores an undulating concrete outer form that has been compared to a sting ray, and has become a globally celebrated example of nondenominational chapel architecture.
Take a look:
Delicious, is it not?
The second is the infamous Ponte Tower, which sits in the middle of Jozi’s Hillbrow:
The Ponte Tower – sometimes erroneously dismissed as dangerous and rundown structure – has found new life recently after extensive renovations and upgrades to the structure and interiors. Its architectural relevance is now also being recognised, first as an example of modernist architecture, and secondly as a symbol of the city itself.
And the image chosen? One that shows a seemingly endless atrium:
Kinda trippy.
