Fokkit, not another one.
The N2 highway between Sir Lowry’s Pass and Botrivier was closed yesterday after another vegetation fire blinded the region. You might have noticed that the city bowl and most of the southern suburbs were covered in thick smoke.
This is what EWN had to say about it:
Strong winds are fanning thick smoke from a veld fire on the slopes of Sir Lowry’s Pass across the Peninsula.
Check this shot from Mike Eloff:
Theo Layne from Fire and Rescue explained the flames:
“There’s still an extensive area of Mountain Slopes that is burning, it has gone all the way to the R44 now and so far we have had four residential dwellings that have been damaged or destroyed.”
Ouch.
More scenes straight outta hell:

A witness and member of the Gordon’s Bay community, Marius Knoesen, was live:
“At the moment I’m on a construction site across the road from the old properties on Gordon’s Bay on the mountain slopes. And by the count of a finger, five properties’ have burnt or are currently burning.
“Currently there is a lot of smoke in the air but I can see a few properties are burning [and] I can see the flames coming out of the roof, out of the windows. They are burnt.”
After the efforts of 200 firefighters and 33 fire engines, fierce southeasterly winds continued to spread the flames. Helderberg’s Animal Welfare even had to be evacuated before the property was destroyed.
Bryn De Kocks, Cape Town photographer, gives us another perspective:
Thanks for at least making it cool to look at, bro.
