Money doesn’t make you happy…if you’re Mark Zuckerberg. Rather, the already-billionaire CEO of Facebook is after something else.
Despite three formidably profitable months, he stated that:
“Our community continues to grow and our business is doing well, but…none of that matters if our services are used in ways that don’t bring people closer together.”
What he’s talking about is the amount of unfiltered abuse taking place on the platform. To Zuckerberg, “protecting our community is more important than maximising our profits”.
Over $10.3 billion (R143 billion) was brought in by Facebook over the last three months, a 47% increase from last year.
If you didn’t catch it, here’s an idea of what might have inspired Zuckerberg’s less-than-happy tone.
At Tuesday’s Crime and Terrorism Subcommittee hearing, Sen. John Kennedy slammed Facebook, saying:
“I think you do enormous good, but your power sometimes scares me.”
Although Zuckerberg didn’t attend the hearing, the platform’s General Counsel, Colin Stretch, spoke on the company’s behalf and Mashable let us in on what went down:
Facebook along with Twitter and Google have avoided regulation for the most part from the U.S. government. Now, lawmakers have a bill called the “Honest Ads Act” that would require internet companies to keep a public database of who is paying for political ads.
During the hearing Senator Dianne Feinstein reminded Facebook that:
“We are not going to go away, gentleman. And this is a very big deal. You have a huge problem on your hands.”
Zuckerberg’s response was quick and refreshing:
“We’re bringing the same intensity to these security issues that we brought to any adversary or challenge that we’ve faced,” he said.
“I am dead serious about this.”
He’s even willing to sacrifice the company’s profitability, warning investors about security expenses that will increase by 45-60% in the next year. They’re planning to expand their “safety and security team” from 10 000 to 20 000:
“It will significantly impact our profitability going forward. I believe it will make our society stronger,” Zuckerberg said.
Cool to see a tech-head with such a human-centered goal. Make it happen, Mark.
