Yes, yes, we know Halloween 2017 has yet to arrive, but the award isn’t being given to a person who chose to wear some controversial outfit.
Get a load of this – accused of “trivialising her memory as a costume”, HalloweenCostumes.com has been forced to remove a Halloween costume depicting a “World War II evacuee girl” – or Anne Frank – who is wearing World War II-era clothing and a green beret, reports TIME:
“We should not trivialize [sic] her memory as a costume,” said Carlos Galindo-Elvira, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Arizona office.
Last night, the costume appeared to be removed from Walmart’s website as well, but it was still being sold on Amazon.
Poor form.
Of course HalloweenCostumes.com had to try and save face, so they released this statement:
“We sell costumes not only for Halloween, but for many uses outside of the Halloween season, such as school projects and plays. We offer several types of historically accurate costumes – from prominent figures to political figures, to television characters,” a spokesperson for HalloweenCostumes.com said in a tweet Sunday night, adding that the costume had been removed.
“We apologize for any offense it has caused, as that’s never our intention.”
Take a look at what it was they were selling:
Is that a tag on her collar? No, just no.
