Tim, we don’t throw around the word ‘genocide’ lightly, OK?
What’s going on over in Myanmar right now is a genocide, and if you can stomach learning a little more about the Rohingya people and the attempt to wipe them from the face of the planet HERE’S a good place to start.
It’s not pretty and it’s not easy reading but hey, that’s genocide for you.
Then we have Prof Tim, who we last saw laying into vegans HERE, and his take on dietary guidelines.
During a Twitter exchange with a health enthusiast from Australia (you can see that HERE), Noakes was met with this table.
It’s one of those dietary guideline nutrition pyramids, and to be fair it’s probably a little dated:
Noakes was having none of it and came out swinging:
Sheesh, that escalated.
Times LIVE can shine a little more light on this:
The guidelines that Noakes referred to as “akin to genocide” promote a daily 8 glasses of water‚ 3-4 servings of fruit a day‚ 6-11 servings of unrefined carbohydrates‚ 2-3 servings of dairy and minimum use of fats. Some people following Noakes on Twitter were horrified that he compared the recommendations to the mass slaughter of ethnic groups…
Paediatrician and commentator on junk science Alastair McAlpine told TimesLIVE that Noakes’ tweet was disparaging to the real victims of genocide: “Regardless of your feelings of the so-called ‘food pyramid’‚ to compare it to ‘genocide’ demeans the real victims of genocide‚ and grossly insults the well-meaning individuals who put the pyramid together.”
…Dietician Megan Pentz-Kluyts explained to Noakes on Twitter that the South African guidelines have changed‚ so the subject of Noakes’ tweet was outdated. “Why does the [food] pyramid keep coming up? It has not been followed or recommended in South Africa nutrition circles for quite some time #oldnews”
Seriously, when last did you sit down with a food pyramid and map out your meals for the week?
Let’s take a few deep breaths before throwing around words like ‘genocide’, as they tend to stir up quite a bit of emotion.
As you were, Monday.
