It used to be that lyric music videos were mostly fan-made, a fun and simple way for YouTubers to share their favourite songs.
But then the artists got in on the action and, naturally, things became far more interesting.
Using the most “efficient, portable and reliable piece of hardware” he owns, South African YouTube gaming vlogger Grant Hinds set out to create a lyrical video for UK pop sensation Maisie Peters’ first ever single, “Place We Were Made”.
“The hardest part was deciding how I was going to execute the tactile treatment of the brief,” explained Hinds when we asked him about the task he was given by Peters:
“There are actually quite a few apps available on iOS, especially for the iPad Pro [available at Digicape] that I could’ve used which would’ve changed the direction of the look.”
In the end, Hinds went with Procreate, an app that has come to be his “most valued illustration app”:
“I do this sort of creative illustrative work all the time. Another notable mention is Caspar Lee’s ‘Tourettes’ video. This was all created using the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.
“As you can see, there are so many illustrative executions you can do.”
Here’s his final product:
But Hind’s real obsession is with the iPad:
“I remember when the original iPad came out, to me it turned technology into paper, websites into newspaper. It made digital spaces surprisingly tactile. That was because not only was it portable, I could literally touch my emails and the blogs I was reading.
“The iPad Pro has taken that ethos a little further for me personally by making it my digital sketch book. I take it everywhere, I draw when I have a moment, I have unlimited paper and an infinite amount of creative tools at my disposal. It bends my brain sometimes!
“It’s the most efficient, portable and reliable piece of hardware I have for this. Of course I could’ve used a Wacom, but I was able to work on the bus, sketch when I had an idea and work at a coffee shop as if I was sketching in a sketchbook.
“In fact, the brief was very specific in the type of teenager doodles that needed to be done, and by alternating my environment and casting my mind back, I was able to generate more creative moods and authentic tones than I would sitting at an office desk.”
Convinced? If you’re looking to get into illustration, but want a product that is able to do a multitude of other things, like email, browse and feature games for your pets, the iPad Pro 10.5 is available at Digicape.
