Anyone who possesses extensive knowledge of Kurt Cobain’s life, knows the last few months were chaotic to say the least.
You would also know that one of his last performances, MTV Unplugged, would come to be one of Nirvana’s most poignant and beloved recordings, explains Loud Wire:
At the time, Nirvana had seen their popularity reach new heights and the band had become one of the most familiar faces on the music video network thanks to videos like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come as You Are,” “In Bloom” and “Heart-Shaped Box.”
At the same time, MTV had spawned one of the most popular music showcases of the day with their MTV Unplugged series, showcasing some of the biggest acts performing their songs in an acoustic setting.
Together, they would make magic that would last a lifetime.
During the set, Cobain’s outfit featured his usual grungy appearance, a “fashion” style that would go to inspire the likes of Hedi Slimane for Yves Saint Laurent and Marc Jacobs.
The Guardian gave a tongue-in-cheek breakdown of a piece of now-famed clothing worn by Cobain on stage and where it ended up:
The cardigan worn by Kurt Cobain on Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged performance has sold in auction for $137,500 (R1,8 million).
The cardigan, a moth-eaten, oversized acrylic, mohair and Lycra mix, was donated by a friend of the Nirvana frontman and exceeded its expected bid by about $15k.
The Yves Saint Laurent designs inspired by Cobain’s jersey would feature the same mohair knit, made from the hair of the Angora goat, which is bred mainly in South Africa.
And Mohair South Africa knows all about it.
An organisation based in Port Elizabeth, and established specifically to advance of the entire mohair industry, the role that South Africa plays in producing high fashion pieces is pretty impressive:

A year after Nirvana’s performance, the album was released and immediately debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart:
The disc would go on to be certified 5 times platinum and has universally been considered one of the greatest live albums of all-time. Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged in New York would also win the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996 and the DVD would be released in 2007.
