Most travellers have their mid-flight pet peeves, but you’ll generally find everyone less than impressed with one of the engines exploding “in a giant fireball”.
That’s exactly what happened to Air France passengers on a Paris-Los Angeles flight, who heard a loud bang followed by around 20 minutes of the cabin shaking.
The plane made an emergency landing at a military airfield in Newfoundland, Canada, by which point the engine was in a wrecked state.
Here’s some footage of the engine mid-flight:
And then the relief that came with the safe emergency landing:

The Telegraph with a few passenger accounts:
Pamela Adams, a passenger, said there was “a tremendous bang… like the plane hit a Jeep at 35,000 feet. We grabbed on to something and then we sat down, and the plane righted itself fairly soon.”
Another passenger, Daniel McNeely, said those in window seats said the entire engine exploded “in a giant fireball.”
Sarah Eamigh said: ”The cabin started vibrating. Someone screamed, and from there we knew something was wrong. We saw the cabin crew walking through the aisles quickly, and we heard an announcement from the captain that said one of our engines had an explosion.”
Thankfully this one has a happy ending, with no injuries amongst the 520 passengers and crew on board.
