If the build up to Mother! was anything to go by, it was always obvious that the film was going to be a little out there.
I mean, just look at the poster [main image above].
But packed with an A-List cast (Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer) and directed by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (previous films include Black Swan, Requiem For A Dream and The Fountain), fans were expecting something amazing.
However, not all were that impressed.
Released this past weekend in the US, the Telegraph explains that the horror movie had an ” impressively terrible weekend at the box office”.
Not only were there minimal ticket sales (earning a meagre $7,5 million (R100 million) in its opening weekend) but many of the audience walked out and took to Twitter to share their thoughts.
Some fans, some haters:
The film was even graced with an “F” score from exiting audience members.
But the good news? It has also inspired an abundance of ‘explainers’ attempting to decipher what it all meant.
Then there’s this gem from Paramount Pictures’ worldwide president of marketing, Megan Colligan, who backed the film in a statement:
“This movie is very audacious and brave. You are talking about a director at the top of his game, and an actress at the top her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold.
“Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no one else wants to tell. This is our version. We don’t want all movies to be safe. And it’s okay if some people don’t like it.”
You go girl.
