We’ve had Olympic gold medallists galore, golfers winning majors, two Rugby World Cups, an African Cup of Nations – the list goes on.
You know what South Africa hasn’t ever been able to celebrate? A US Open winner.
On Wednesday morning Kevin Anderson defeated Sam Querrey in the US Open quarter-final over at Flushing Meadows, sealing his spot in tonight’s semi-finals.
In doing so he became the first South African since Wayne Ferreira in 2003 to reach a Grand Slam semi, Wayne having done so Down Under at the Australian Open.
Right, so what lies ahead tonight? Kevin will square off against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta – the tournament’s 12th seed – and the match will start at 10PM South African time.
That’s right, tonight at 10PM on SuperSport 6 – that gives you enough time to get a little sauced before cheering our man on.
Here’s a picture of Pablo looking emotional after a loss, just to get inside his head:
Kevin and Pablo have met twice before, and our man won both of those matches without losing a set.
Some betting odds – leading South African bookies Sportingbet have Anderson as a 1/3 favourite to beat Carreno Busta. Busta, who is the 21/10 underdog.
Anderson is a 11/2 third-favourite to go on to the lift the title. Go on, have a little punt on our man HERE.
Should Anderson overcome Carreno Busta, he would face another Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, or Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in the final.
I usually cheer Rafa on, but if Kevin can beat Pablo I’ll be hoping the Argentinian comes out tops.
We may never see a better chance to watch a South African tennis player in a Grand Slam final than now, so let’s just hope Kevin and that monster serve hit top gear tonight.
