BREAKING: Kevin Anderson Just Made SA Tennis History

The big-serving South African defeated crowd favourite Sam Querrey in four sets, setting a pretty impressive record in doing so.

All hail Kevin Anderson, who just put on a hell of a show late into the US night.

It was edging 2AM over at Flushing Meadows in New York, but a sizeable crowd remained to cheer on American Sam Querrey.

That didn’t deter 31-year old Kevin, though, who beat the home favourite 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (9/11), 6-3, 7-6 (9/7) to advance to the US Open semi-final.

That’s particularly impressive when you realise that no South African has made the semi-final of the US Open in the Open era of tennis, which started in 1968.

The last South African to do so was Cliff Drysdale, who made the final of the 1965 US National Championships, as the US Open was then called.

So who was the last South African to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam? Wayne Ferreira at the 2003 Australian Open.

It’s also Kevin’s first ever final four appearance, bettering his US Open quarter-final run back in 2015.

The big-serving South African will now face 12th seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta. Who? This chap…

Their match will take on Friday, although times are still to be confirmed.
