When AB de Villiers recently announced that he would be available for the national team in all three formats of the game, cricket fans around the world were delighted.
Opposition bowlers perhaps not as much, because an in-form AB may well be the most destructive hitter the world has ever seen.
We all remember his 31-ball century at the Wanderers back in 2015, smashing it all over the park in pink, and it’s been a while since someone has come close to matching that effort.
Now AB’s 100 was in ODI, and Evin Lewis was playing in a T20 as part of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), but the latter’s efforts were still a sight to behold.
Before we touch on the controversy surrounding his failure to reach three figures, let’s enjoy that hitting power:
Watching on from the other end was none other than Chris Gayle, who holds the world record for fastest T20 100 (30 balls) during that outrageous innings of 175 from 66 balls in the IPL.
Lewis needed a boundary at the end to secure his ton, but Kieron Pollard courted controversy when he bowled what appeared to be an intentional no-ball:
That doesn’t seem very much in the spirit of things, Kieron.
The Citizen don’t think it was a mistake:
…Lewis was on his way to a whirlwind century before Kieron Pollard, who will play for the Bloem City Blazers in the T20 Global League later this year, showed him a symbolic middle finger…
With one run needed for victory, the left-hander could’ve reached a sensational hundred with another boundary.
But Pollard was having none of it and decided to bowl a no-ball, which looked suspiciously deliberate.
It was a sad way for the match to end.
Still not the least cool thing to happen on the field during the past seven days. How about this from last week Thursday over in England?
A close up of the arrow:
Now that’s definitely not cricket.
