I’ll be up front and say two things – awesome, yet at the same time who gives a flying fox?
Despacito has been smashing records for fun these past few months, and back in July the song vanquished Gangnam Style as the most viewed YouTube video of all time.
But hang on, because there’s one area where it didn’t come out tops. Wait for it…
Twitter data. Here’s EW:
…by one noteworthy metric, it wasn’t the song of summer.
That honor [sic], according to Twitter data, goes to Fifth Harmony’s “Down.” Released on June 2, the Gucci Mane-featuring song was the pop group’s first since the 2016 departure of Camila Cabello and appeared on their self-titled album, which dropped last week. In fact, Cabello’s own solo single, “Crying in the Club,” also beat out “Despacito” in terms of tweets generated; the tracks came in at Nos. 2 and 3 on the list, respectively. Rounding out the list are “2U” by Justin Bieber and David Guetta and “Slow Hands” by Niall Horan…
Twitter’s announcement isn’t the first to suggest that not everyone sees “Despacito” as the song of summer. The track dominated pop culture in recent months, spawning parodies ranging from Sesame Street to Donald Trump, but lost the MTV Video Music Awards’ fan-voted Song of the Summer honor to Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3.”
Right, let’s see what this song Down is all about:
Not my vibe.
