There are over 7 500 level crossings located around South Africa.
Although one would hope common sense would be employed upon approaching them, it’s clear the whole scenario gets the better of people.
Things seem to get even worse when there’s a train approaching.
Locally, level crossings at False Bay and Kalk Bay have seen vehicles and trains collide, but while we generally only bear witness to the aftermath via a picture snapped by a delayed and frustrated commuter, we now have an actual video showing what a crash looks like.
Up in Tarlton, Krugersdorp, four people sustained injuries earlier this week after the vehicle they were in collided with an oncoming train, reports ER24:
When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene at 11H55, all of the occupants were out of the vehicle.
Upon closer inspection, paramedics found that the occupants sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious.
The ER24 Oneplan helicopter transported a woman to Lenmed Randfontein for further medical care.
The other patients were transported by ER24 and another medical service on scene to nearby hospitals for further medical care.
While the exact circumstances aren’t clear, even after Metrorail and SAPS hit the scene for further investigations, one Mark Jansen van Rensburg was able to capture just what went down and it’s awful:
How did they not even stop?
