It’s rare to find a well done steak these days.
With so many restaurants trying to appease a range of personal preferences, the perfectionism can get lost among a five-page menu which features everything from salads, to seafood, to pasta and steak.
Thankfully, there are those that make it their business to know who can cook the perfect steak and, when prompted, South Africans came up with 150 steakhouses across the country that do just that.
Part of the annual Wolftrap Steakhunter Competition, the public was then asked to vote for their favourite.
Then, to determine the best, a panel of judges led by chef Pete Goffe-Wood travelled South Africa to taste steaks, sides and sauces, all under the guidance of a strict set of rules:
“Steak is a way of life for South African’s,” explained Goffe-Wood. “Whether it is Spur of or Local Grill, the steakhouse is where South Africa eats.”
With only a few points separating the top three restaurants, it was Rare Grill that took the crown of best Steakhouse in South Africa.
Situated in Kenilworth, you might not be familiar with the steakhouse – but that could be because it was only opened at the end of October last year by chef/owner Greg Bax.
The 30-seater steakhouse also walked away with the prize for Best Newcomer. Bax said on the win:
“For an intimate steakhouse like Rare Grill, such an accolade is going to put us on the map.
Boom.
More from Times LIVE:
Rare Grill bested more than 150 other participants from across the country including Johannesburg’s perennial winner The Local Grill, which came in second, and last year’s winner Little Havana of Umhlanga which bagged a bronze for their efforts this year.
“Rare Grill is a gem, an owner-operated steakhouse where Greg mans the grill and takes immense pride in the quality of his beef,” said Geoff-Wood.
And this is the first time Cape Town has produced a championship winner since the competition began five years ago.
