Clean up on aisle Trump, please.
That was the message, even from within the Republican party, following Donald Trump’s press conference about the recent violence in Charlottesville.
You know, when someone used his car as a battering ram and murdered an innocent woman who was standing up against hate (HERE).
So against everyone’s better judgement Donald Trump strode to the podium, set up in the lobby of his Midtown Manhattan building, and from the start it was a trainwreck.
In a nutshell he blamed the violence over the weekend on “both sides”, equating the white supremacists on one side with the “alt-left” on the other side.
A little video just to get us started – look how angry the Orange Menace is:
Sure, but only one side was chanting this in broad daylight:
Don’t forget they also chanted “Jews will not replace us”, waving Swastikas and wearing Nazi regalia, carrying lit torches through the streets and dishing out the ‘Heil Hitler’ salutes.
Via CNN, some of the more alarming quotes not covered in that video above:
On whether the attack that killed Heather Heyer in Charlottesville was ‘terrorism’
“You can call it terrorism. You can call it murder. You can call it whatever you want. I would just call it as the fastest one to come up with a good verdict. That’s what I’d call it. Because there is a question. Is it murder? Is it terrorism? And then you get into legal semantics.”
The correct answer is condemnation, buddy.
On the media coverage of the ‘Unite the Right’ rally
“And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly. Now, in the other group also, you had some fine people, but you also had troublemakers and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets and with the baseball bats. You’ve got — you had a lot of bad — you had a lot of bad people in the other group.”
After being asked if he’s spoken to the family of Heather Heyer
“I’ll be reaching out. … I was very — I thought that the statement put out — the mother’s statement I thought was a beautiful statement. I must tell you, I was — it was something that I really appreciated. I thought it was terrific. And really, under the — under the kind of stress that she’s under and the heartache that she’s under, I thought putting out that statement to me was really something I won’t forget.”
On Charlottesville
“I mean I know a lot about Charlottesville. Charlottesville is a great place that has been very badly hurt over the last couple of days. I own, actually, one of the largest wineries in the United States — it’s in Charlottesville.”
Trust me, I own stuff there.
You know you’ve buggered up when those within your party start calling you out – some Republican responses from the Guardian:
John McCain was among those calling on Trump by name to do more. The Arizona senator tweeted: “There’s no moral equivalency between racists and Americans standing up to defy hate and bigotry. The president of the United States should say so.”
His sentiments were echoed by one of Trump’s rival Republican presidential candidates, Jeb Bush, who said in a statement: “This is a time for moral clarity, not ambivalence. I urge President Trump to unite the country, not parse the assignment of blame for the events in Charlottesville.
“For the sake of our country, he must leave no room for doubt that racism and hatred will not be tolerated or ignored by his White House.”
Mitt Romney, the party’s nominee in 2012, said the president was wrong to point to blame “on many sides”, tweeting: “One side is racist, bigoted, Nazi. The other opposes racism and bigotry. Morally different universes.”
…Senator Marco Rubio of Florida also called out Trump, tweeting: “Mr. President, you can’t allow #WhiteSupremacists to share only part of blame. They support idea which cost nation & world so much pain.”
The list goes on and on and on.
Consider how history looks at those who protested against apartheid, or the civil rights movement in America – there is no “both sides”, there are those who fought for equality and basic human decency and those opposed to it.
If you don’t know what Donald is about by now, then I guess there’s no seeing the light.
