There’s something about the British and their humour that puts their American counterparts to shame.
Perhaps it’s the lack of canned audience laughter, or maybe it’s the fact that there isn’t a strict ‘set up and punchline’ format on loop every episode.
I’d throw a third into the mix – they know how to stop while they’re ahead.
Detectorists is the kind of show that you more than likely haven’t heard of. We’re talking two seasons, the last of which aired back in 2015, and a cast that is pretty low key.
You’ll recognise Mackenzie Crook from The Office, but chances are you won’t be familiar with the rest.
Per IMDd:
The lives of two eccentric metal detectorists, who spend their days plodding along ploughed tracks and open fields, hoping to disturb the tedium by unearthing the fortune of a lifetime.
That’s right, it’s mostly two guys in a field poking around for a lost fortune. It’s not quite comedy and it’s not quite drama, but who isn’t a little confused these days, right?
I’ve had friends who love it and friends who loathe it, but if you’re looking for a quick binge fix (12 episodes and a Christmas special) perhaps you want to get stuck into this:
There are full episodes available on YouTube, but if you’re download savvy then do your thing.
Also, the show’s theme tune will get stuck in your head:
