Back in the day, when the internet didn’t exist and we used to play outside and subscribe to magazines, MAD was something of a treat.
One of their prize assets is Al Jaffee, now 96 years young and the longest-working cartoonist in comics history.
He is also the father of the ‘fold in comic’, where the “publication’s back-page reveals a surprise message and image once the illustration’s middle section is collapsed”.
Today, before Trumpcare went down in flames over in America, they published this beaut.
First, as the back page appears:
And what happens when you fold A and B together – you know, the yellow arrows you can see at the top and bottom of the page…
Yoh – nailed it.
Jeffee spoke to the Washington Post about why he decided to go this route:
“The fold-in is a sort of bait-and-switch process,” Jaffee tells The Washington Post’s Comic Riffs. “The full-page scene asks and illustrates a question. After the page is folded, a surprise new scene and answer appear.
“In that way,” he continues, “it’s not very different from what the Republicans did during the last election with the health-care plan.”
Well that’s blown up in their faces, leaving Trump to send this tweet earlier today when their Obamacare repeal flopped:
Such a petty, sad little man.
It’s a guarantee that there will be another tweetstorm when he wakes up, so expect the toys to fly out of the cot around 2PM our time.
