All hail Roger, the king of Wimbledon.
If you were hoping for an epic men’s final you would have been disappointed with yesterday’s Centre Court showdown, Roger prevailing in straight sets over Croatian Marin Cilic.
That shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise, given that Roger didn’t drop a single set throughout the entire tournament.
So how much cash do you get for such total domination, other than Wimbledon title number eight? A cool £2,2 million (R37,5 million), with runner up Cilic banking half that amount.
The men and women’s prize money below:
By this stage of his career, though, it’s certainly not money that is driving the Prince on. In the 12 months prior to June 31 of this year, Roger made a whopping $58 million (R756 million) from endorsements and appearance fees alone.
That’s bonkers, and (according to Forbes) is the highest total from sponsors for any athlete in the world.
During his entire career, Roger has raked in $107,3 million (R1,4 billion) in prize money alone, just a few million dollars behind Novak on the all-time list (Novak has $110,4).
And now for the real mind-boggling number – endorsements, prize money, add it all up and what do you get? Again from Forbes, it is estimated that Roger has made around $625 million (R8,15 billion) during his career.
YOH.
For what it’s worth, Serena Williams leads the women’s earning charts with over $84 million (R1,1 billion) in prize money, almost $50 million more than sister Venus and Maria Sharapova, who occupy second and third.
Basically, if you have a kid these days, a tennis racquet isn’t a bad first birthday present. And second birthday. And third birthday…
